Working with Zoom H5

Very recently I purchased ZOOM H5 portable recorder. Included in the package was:

  • Operation manual
  • XYH-5 X/Y mic capsule
  • SD card (2 GB)
  • AA size (LR6) battery x 2
  • USB cable
  • Foam windscreen
  • Case
  • Steinberg WaveLab LE software download
  • Steinberg Cubase LE software download

I have started experimenting with its UI a lot. Very handy to navigate and choose options. The device can function both as a standalone recorder (running on battery or USB charger) but also as an audio interface through the USB connection. Both modes are extremely easy to use. Additional purchase was the EXH-6¬†DUAL XLR/TRS INPUT CAPSULE for connecting more instruments. Recording couldn’t be made any easier.

Ultimately however, I had to test the condenser microphones. I chose to record some clarinet playing by placing the device in front of the instrument in order to capture the best angle. Below is the outcome:

I can only say how excited I am about this purchase and the many many options for portable recording that someone can do.

Next step? Multiband recording with some friends… coming up next month!
